• $42 bill, 18% tip, 2 people: $7.56 tip total, $49.56 total, $24.78 per person.
• $86 bill, 20% tip, 4 people: $17.20 tip total, $103.20 total, $25.80 per person.
• $125 bill, 15% tip, 5 people: $18.75 tip total, $143.75 total, $28.75 per person.

Before tax or after tax?

Many people calculate the tip from the pre-tax food and drink total. Others tip on the full receipt amount because it is faster. For a normal restaurant bill the difference is usually small, so the most important thing is that the group agrees before splitting.

How to split fairly

An even split works when everyone ordered roughly the same amount. If one person ordered significantly more, calculate that person's share separately or use the calculator once for the shared items and again for the individual add-ons.
